In his NBA career, he only played for the Boston Celtics. In the 1970 NBA draft, the Boston Celtics selected him as the fourth overall. There was some criticism leveled at Dave Cowens’ selection because he was small at the time.
But Dave Cowens answered the criticism not directly but in the field. His performance said a lot to the critics. During his rookie year, he averaged 17.0 points per game and 15.0 rebounds per game. In the same season, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team. He also received the NBA’s Rookie of the Year honors.
The last season of the professional career of Dave Cowens was 1979–80. With his outstanding performance, his team recorded 61-21, and he personally secured an average of 14.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 3.1 assists. Retirement
After his retirement, he continued his coaching career with several clubs, including the NBA, CBA, and WNBA. Cownes’ career is intertwined with coaching and playing. The decision to play again mingled his life with play and coaching.
He began his first coaching career with the Boston Celtics during the 1978–79 season as a coach. In the same season, he quit the coaching job and returned to the stage. In the season 2005–2006, he began his coaching career as head coach of the Chicago Sky of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA).
