He started his basketball career with his school life. In his school life, he went to Hunter Huss High School (HHHS) in Gastonia, NC. His impressive performance led the team to the North Carolina state basketball championship in 1977.

His college career began at Georgetown University. In his college life, he played for the Georgetown Hoyas men’s basketball program. Here he played from 1978 to 1982. During the four seasons of his college life, he was the captain of the college team in 1981 and 1982. During his college life, he was named to the All-Big East Conference and All-American teams. In his college career, he scored 2,304 points.

In the 1982 NBA draft, he was selected by the New Jersey Nets 13th overall in the first round. But he could not finish his rookie season with this team. In 1983, he was traded by the New Jersey Nets to the Golden State Warriors. He was a member of this team until 1988. In his first season with this team, he scored 16.8 points per game. In the following season, he scored his career-high 19.5 points per game. He was also an NBA All-Star.
