Tim Brent was born in Cambridge, Ontario, on March 10, 1984. His parents are Ian and Rhonda. He played with Hespeler Shamrocks in the OMHA, Cambridge Hawks in the Alliance Pavilion League, Cambridge Winterhawks Jr.B. team in the OHA Midwestern Ontario Hockey League, and the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament.

For the entrance to the NJL, he was drafted twice. In the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim selected him 37th overall. Again, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim selected him 75th overall.
