In his junior career, he played for the Regina Pats in 1940-41. After moving to the Oshawa Generals, he played here from 1941 to 1944. He won the Memorial Cup in 1944.

Kenny Smith started to skate through the way of professional Ice Hockey in 1944, and he stopped skating at the end of his retirement in 1957. In his professional career, he played in the AHL, NHL, SJHL, and MMHL. He represented the Regina Generals, Boston Bruins, Hershey Bears, Pittsburgh Hornets, Pitts.-Providence, and Sydney Millionaires.
In his NHL career, he played 331 games representing the Boston Bruins. He played for this team from 1944 to 1951. In the 1948-49 season, he scored 20 goals and 20 assists. Though he was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs during 1950-51, he did not run for this team.
