During his junior career, in the 1998 OHL Priority Selection, the Plymouth Whalers drafted him 125th overall in the sixth round. In the 1998–99 NAHL seasons, he played for the Compuware Jr. A club.

Justin Williams began his professional career in 2000 and retired in 2020. He played for the Philadelphia Flyers, Carolina Hurricanes, Lule HF, Los Angeles Kings, and Washington Capitals during his 19-year professional ice hockey career.
In the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, the Philadelphia Flyers took him 28th overall. He played for this team till 2004. Through a trade on January 20, 2004, he became part of the Carolina Hurricanes. He was with this team till 2009. During his tenure with this team, he played for a short while in the Swedish Hockey League for the Luleå HF.
From 2009 to 2015, he ran after the puck in the field of ice hockey for the Los Angeles Kings. After completing the two-year contract, he joined the Washington Capitals and played with the team until 2017. In 2017, he returned to his old team, the Carolina Hurricanes. On October 8, 2020, he declared the end of his glorious NHL career.
