In the 2007 Major League Baseball draft, the Chicago Cubs took him 48th overall in the first round. This year he played for the Arizona Complex League Cubs and Boise Hawks. He had a 0.335 average, nine home runs, and 25 RBIs in 53 seasons. In 2008, he played in 63 games for the Peoria Chiefs and hit.217 with six home runs and 23 RBIs.
