Culberson spent his early years at Calhoun High School in Calhoun, Georgia. His outstanding performance led his team to the state championship in 2005. Drafted MLB teams
During his professional career in baseball, he played for the San Francisco Giants, Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves, and Texas Rangers. In the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft, the San Francisco Giants took him 51st overall in the 1st round. Before 2012, he played in the Double-A Eastern League for the Richmond Flying Squirrels, batting .259 with ten home runs and 56 RBI. He established himself as the seventh-best second-base prospect in the country.
Later, he played in the Class AAA Pacific Coast League for the Fresno Grizzlies. He made his way into the major leagues after a successful career in the minor leagues.

His MLB debut was against the San Francisco Giants on May 13, 2012. He spent one year with this team. With a trade deal, he became a player for the Colorado Rockies in 2013 and played through the seasons of 2013–2014. He signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers, with whom he spent the 2016–2017 seasons. With a trade deal, he became a member of the Atlanta Braves in 2017 and played for them from 2018 to 2020. In exchange for playing in the minor leagues, he signed a contract with the Texas Rangers in 2020. It was the last team of his professional career. He played for this team in 2021. In 90 games in 2021, Culberson hit 0.243/0.296/0.381/0.676, with five home runs, 22 RBI, and seven stolen bases.
