His basketball career began at the Colony High School (TCHS) in the city of The Colony, Texas, USA. In his school career, he scored on average 17 points, 9.4 assists, and two steals per game in his junior year in 2001. In 2002, in his senior season, he scored on average 17.6 points, 8.5 assists, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.6 steals per game.

College Career 

His college basketball was also successful in his professional career. He started his college basketball career at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in Illinois in the twin cities of Champaign and Urbana. During his study at this college, he played for the Illinois Fighting Illini men’s basketball team. He played in this college from 2002 to 2005. 

During his college tenure, in his freshman year, he ranked third in the Big Ten Conference with assists of 4.53 per game. He became the Consensus second-team All-American. In his sophomore season, he scored on average 14.0 points per 6.17 average per game, First-Team All-Big Ten selection.
